Evaluation of simulated ground motions using probabilistic seismic demand analysis: CyberShake (ver. 15.12) simulations for Ordinary Standard Bridges

There is a need for benchmarking and validating simulated ground motions in order them to be utilized by the engineering community. Such validation may geared towards specific motion simulation method, target application, location; presented herein focuses on bridge application southern California. Catalogs of representing 200,000-year forecast are selected from Southern California Earthquake Center CyberShake version 15.12 database five sites (~20,000 unscaled per site). They used Non-Linear Time History Analysis (NLTHA) four Ordinary Standard Bridge structures. For each site, these data obtain simulation-based Engineering Demand Parameter (EDP) hazard curves. These compared against EDP curves that constructed using conventional methods based empirical models, i.e., recorded through Incremental Dynamic integration over Intensity Measure (IM) curve. The two sets at various return periods. To further account differences between motions, direct comparisons also made IM catalogs, as well versus obtained NLTHA bridges. We observe simulates yield similar values shorter longer periods, however, EDPs analysis tend lower than utilizing short-period bridges, while opposite case long-period It recommended efforts go beyond levels include relations IMs EDPs. Finally, site-specific proposed correlate ratio types (simulation-based conventional) with level, shallow site condition, basin depth.
